ABOUT

What’s H.A.L. about?
HALiterature specializes in publishing exceptional local and expat authors from China, for whom this country forms the natural backdrop of an at-times mundane, at-times wholly extraordinary existence. Amidst the tumult of economic explosion, identity crises, national glory, and East-meets-West clichés are individuals living their lives like anyone else. We are working nine to five, falling in and out of love, fucking and fighting, building and destroying. We are bored, we are entertained, we are ecstatic and depressed. We are locals, we are expats, we are yellow, black, and white. And we are writing. H.A.L. sets out to publish us.

What type of texts does H.A.L. work with?
Poetry, prose, screen plays, essays, epiphanies, or pornography – as long as it is quality. H.A.L.’s first edition Party like it’s 1984 – short stories from the peoples’ republic of will debut in Summer 2010. Projects currently in development include movie scripts, full-length novels, poetry and more. Please read under Projects for more info.

Where can I buy H.A.L. editions?
H.A.L.’s productions can be found at selected locations in mainland China and Hong Kong. You may also purchase our works through our online store. Free delivery to all addresses of the Peoples’ Republic.

H.A.L. workshops and public readings
H.A.L. hosts the fortnightly writers workshop Groupthink in Shanghai, comprised of both H.A.L. authors as well as new invites. Should you be interested in attending, we encourage you to email our editors.

We are also working in tandem with the Shanghai-based Art+ initiative to coordinate writing workshops designed for local youths (you guessed it, H.A.L. cherishes family values).
